What to do right now
- Turn the water off at the stopcock. It's usually under the kitchen sink, sometimes where the water pipe comes into the house, or in a cupboard or under the stairs. Turn it clockwise.
- Stay away from wet electrics. If water is coming through a light fitting or near sockets, don't touch switches. If you can reach the consumer unit safely with dry hands, switch the electricity off there.
- Turn off the heating and the immersion heater if the leak is on the hot side or near the hot water cylinder.
- Open the cold taps in the kitchen and bathroom to drain water out of the pipes, which takes pressure off the leak.
- Catch what you can. Buckets and towels under drips, and move anything valuable out of the way.
- Take photos. They help your insurer, and they help Pete. Send them over on WhatsApp.
